Lorenzo Sonego v Nuno Borges Head to Head

0-2 Start for Sonego in 2023

Sonego played really well for Italy in the Davis Cup to finish the year but he hasn’t started this new season very well. He played two matches so far and lost both matches in Adelaide.

It has to be said that Sonego faced some really strong opposition to start the year as the first match was a loss to Daniil Medvedev with the second one being a loss to Jack Draper. Both of these players have played better than Sonego in recent months.

Sonego has played rather well in Australia over the years. He improved with every year and his best result was last year when he reached the 3rd round. I’m not sure I expect something similar this year as he’s coming off a very bad year overall so he might take some time to find his footing.

His game suits Australia really well but he’s an incredibly streaky player so you never quite know what you’re going to get from him.

Zero Prep for Borges in 2023

Nuno Borges arrived in Australia without playing a single match and that’s something that’s certainly going to be an issue.

Having played no matches so far will mean rusty tennis for Borges who will take a set, maybe even two to get properly going. Playing practice matches is fine but it doesn’t compare with a competitive match. Most of his matches last year were on clay and he generally doesn’t play much on hard courts.

Borges has a game for hard courts but he needs to play far more in order to get used to playing on them. The serve will be a crucial weapon for him down under but it needs to be on point. That is not always the case.

This is also his first Australian Open so that’s something he’ll need to figure out as well. I expect him do do okay but it’s unlikely he wins this one.

Sonego v Borges Prediction and Tip

This is an interesting matchup in the sense that you don’t really know what is going to happen. Sonego should win but he can also lose the match. We’re going to be quite risky here by betting on a close and competitive match.
