Baez Hoping for Another R2

Sebastian Baez reached the second round of the Australian Open last year and it was a surprise. He’ll try to do the same this year but it would be an even bigger surprise.

There are no two ways about it, Baez is not a very good hard court player. Not at this stage of his career. He might be in the future but much of what he does well on a tennis court doesn’t really work on hard courts. A 6-12 record on the surface last year clearly shows that.

He did make the second round last year but he played Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a fellow clay player who doesn’t do that well on hard courts. This year will present a much harder task and the year didn’t start well anyway.

He played two matches and lost both. The first one came against Pedro Martinez and the second came against Ben Shelton.

Kubler Looking To Keep Aussie Summer going

Jason Kubler has been playing really well to start this year and he would like to extend that in his home slam that starts in a few days.

Kubler got a really good starting draw taking on a player who is not very good on hard courts and it’s a matchup he should win. Especially so since he’s playing at home and will have the support of his fellow countrymen. Kubler has proven in the past that it matters to him.

He also proved last year that he can play well on the biggest stage. He had some good matches at grand slams and is playing rather good tennis at the moment. 3-1 is his score so far this year with a win over Dan Evans as well.

Oddly, Kubler never played in the Australian Open main draw so expect him to be very motivated for this one. I do expect him to deliver a rather comfortable victory.

Baez v Kubler Prediction and Tip

Nobody expects Baez to take this match and that’s why Kubler is the overwhelming favourite despite being lower ranked. I do expect him to win but also to win comfortably.
