Nakashima Winless Ahead of Australian Open

Brandon Nakashima has not won a single match before the Australian Open but he also only played one match. It’s not ideal but he’ll hope it doesn’t matter.

Nakashima’s only match came in Adelaide last week as he took on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and it wasn’t a very good match from the American. He finished the year in strong fashion winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan but he was no match against the Spaniard.

Nakashima plays a very typical American style of tennis which focuses on a powerful serve and good groundstrokes. That should work well in Melbourne on the faster courts and he showed some promise last year.

It was a match against Berrettini and he won a set. McDonald is not as good as the Italian so if he can play himself into a good rhythm during the match there is no reason to think Nakashima can’t earn his first win of the year.

It would be his first win in Melbourne as well.

Solid Start for McDonald

Mackenzie McDonald had a solid start to the year as he won two matches so far but also lost two. He played all of his tennis in Adelaide and will be ready to take on the Australian Open challenge.

Wins over Daniel Galan and Dan Evans and losses to Yoshihito Nishioka and Mikael Ymer are good enough challenges to play himself into a good rhythm ahead of this matchup. McDonald has played well over the years in Australia with his best result coming in 2020 when he played in round 4.

It’s not expected that he does that again because that was when he played some of his best tennis and it’s been a while since that happened. Last year it was a loss in round two and that’s more like his usual self.

His strengths are very precise play with a good touch but a lack of power can really be a problem for him. He’ll need to serve as well as he can to stay in matches though.

Nakashima v McDonald Prediction and Tip

They played twice so far and each player won a match. McDonald won the most recent one and both were on hard courts. Nakashima is the better player by now and he should win this one albeit not playing much tennis might see him struggle a bit.
