Anett Kontaveit v Julia Grabher Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Kontaveit in a Rusty Form

In June last year, 16th seed Anett Kontaveit peaked at the #2 spot in the singles ranking. Now, she has fallen down to the 17th position.

The Estonian is not entirely at fault for this as she contracted coronavirus over the season – which seemingly took a toll on her form. Between July and October, she featured in just seven tournaments. She took home the finalist’s silverware from Tallinn and Hamburg while she was beaten early in other events.

Kontaveit started the 2023 tour on a bleak note, losing to Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa in the two Adelaide tournaments.

Given her overall pedigree, the 27-year-old is a formidable opponent capable of big wins. It appears to be a matter of fitness and momentum at this point; perhaps, a match against the lower-ranked Grabher is what she needs to find her bearings again.

Graber Makes Her Major Main-Draw Debut

Julia Graber, age 26, is set to compete in her first Grand Slam main-draw fixture in the Australian Open 2023.

She is 2-2 this season, starting with a second-round showing in Auckland (win over Tereza Martincova, loss to Leylah Fernandez) and a qualifying exit to Kaja Juvan in the Hobart International.

Last season marked a solid spell for the Austrian as she broke into the top 100 and ended the year at #82. Julia won three ITF titles and one Challenger trophy to make it happen – and now hopes to emulate the same form on the WTA circuit.

She does hold promise, as she reached the quarterfinal in Istanbul and round two in Palermo.

Kontaveit v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit is the odds-on favourite, but given her sloppy form, Grabher will fancy her chances of a major win. In fact, the unseeded player is among the underdog bets to make in the first round of the Melbourne Slam.
