Rune entered this season on the back of his best ever year. It was a year in which he won titles at Munich and Stockholm before his biggest career tournament victory.
It came at the Paris Masters, etching his name as one of the few players other than the Big Four to have won even a Masters 1000 tournament.
What made that win even more spectacular is it came at the expense of Novak Djokovic whom he defeated in the final.
Rune, however, hasn’t had the best of starts in 2023. In the only tournament he was scheduled to play in the lead-up to Australian Open, Rune fell in the very first round to Yoshihito Nishioka.
Now, Nishioka isn’t a pushover but not too many expected the 3/10 favourite Rune to bow of the tournament that early. As a result, Rune enters the Australian Open with barely any match practice.
With Rune having never gone beyond the first round at this tournament, he will hope that lack of match practice doesn’t come in his way of overcoming that poor record.

Krajinovic Makes Pune Quarterfinal
Krajninovic opted to take part in the Pune Open in the opening week of the season and gave a good account of himself in that competition.
A three-set win over local boy Sumit Nagal kick-started his year before Krajinovic edged out Michael Mmoh in the second round. Against Benjamin Bonzi, however, Krajinovic met his match, losing in straight sets and bowing out.
This will be Krajinovic’s eighth attempt at the Australian Open and the Serb has made it past the first round on three occasions. Last year, however, Krajinovic lost in the first round, going down in straight sets to Diego Schwartzman.
Against Rune, it could prove to be a challenge to make it past and enter round two despite his opponent’s poor start this year.
