Zverev Hunting for First Win Since Return

It was at the French Open last year that Zverev hobbled out of the competition as a result of a twisted ankle and he was ruled out of the entire season.

The German returned to exhibition tennis late last year as he featured in the Diriyah Tennis Cup and World Tennis League, playing in a total of five matches there. And while he won three of them, even he would know those results don’t count for too much.

What does count is the performance at the ATP level and Zverev’s first tournament since return came at the United Cup earlier this year. Representing Germany, the world number 13 lost both his singles matches this time, going down to Jiri Lehecka and Taylor Fritz.

He will start things off here against a player who has never been ranked better than 97th in the world.

Varillas Makes it Through as a Lucky Loser

Marin Cilic was expected to be one of the seeded players in the tournament but his injury during the Pune Open forced him to withdraw from the Australian Open. And that freed up a spot for a lucky loser which went to Varillas.

Because the Peruvian, now ranked 104th in the world, had made it past two qualifying opponents only to lose in the third qualifier.

It was in 2022 that Varillas had finally broken into the top 100 for the first time in his career. This followed a string of solid performances at the lower level over the past couple of seasons which included three Challenger titles.

The problem for Varillas, other than the obvious fact that Zverev is a far better pedigreed player even when returning from his injury, is he does well on clay but barely plays in hardcourt competitions.

And that is why he doesn’t look likely to stand a chance against the German.

Zverev v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Zverev might be coming off an injury but it’s hard to see him lose this one. With a bit of luck, could even be a straight-set win for the German.
