Pera Coming off QF Result

Bernarda Pera had a good start to the season, especially considering how she ended 2022.

She played in Hobart, where she snapped her five-match first-round losing streak starting in the US Open past August. Pera defeated Madison Brengle and Laura Siegemund to gain momentum; however, she was beaten in the next round by Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Pera enjoyed a decent spell last year; she reached the top 40 and had a record of 33-20 and two singles titles. Both of them were clay-court events in Hamburg and Budapest.

In addition, she was the finalist in Karlsruhe and Concord Challengers. The left-handed American has shown great promise and looks all set to make her mark in 2023.

Her record in the Aus Open is a bit slim, having made it to round three just once in her career.

Uchijima, Making Waves

21-year-old Japanese Moyuka Uchijima was ranked outside the top 400 in 2021. Now, she is on the verge of making her top 100 debut – marked by her superb performance in 2022.

The youngster finished the season with a phenomenal 54-28. She practised heavily on the ITF circuit, winning three titles and two runner-up trophies.

She also competed in the doubles, with her highlight being the Concord Challenger final with Peangtarn Plipuech.

Owing to these consistent results, Uchijima has been handed a wildcard in this year’s Aus Open. Her last tournament was the ASB Classic, where she fell in the qualifiers to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in straight sets.

Pera v Uchijima Prediction and Tip

Pera hasn’t won a major singles match since last year’s Australian Open. There is a good chance that it may be the case time around too.

After all, Uchijima is coming off a great year – now looking to take it up a notch. The Japanese player seems comfortable on hard courts, picking 35 wins on the surface in 2022.

Expect a cracking affair with an upset on the cards.
