Karolina Pliskova v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

This is a rather one-sided rivalry with Pliskova having played and won five times on the WTA circuit against Putintseva. Their last meeting came at the Cincinnati Open in 2021.

Pliskova Wallops Past Wang

Pliskova has fallen to 31st in the world following a string of poor performances but she lived up to her ranking in her first round here against Xiyu Wang.

Wang, ranked 53rd in the world, had an injury cloud over her head and Pliskova looked to have taken full advantage of any such doubts the Chinese player might have had.

With Pliskova having played in two tournaments in the lead-up to the season’s first Grand Slam and lost in the first round at both, she would have been slightly nervous coming into this. She needn’t be as she displayed excellent calm in smacking 19 winners past her opponent.

The match lasted a mere 65 minutes in which Pliskova faced and saved one break-point before eventually winning 6-1, 6-3.

Can she take a step further and emulate her previous two showings at this tournament?

Putintseva Surprise for Sorana

Sorana Cirstea had come into her first round match against Putintseva as a 3/4 favourite to win it, and for some time it looked like she was going to run away with the contest.

The Romanian player grabbed the first set and had a couple of break-points to go 3-1 up in the second. Putintseva held on to her serve and broke Cirstea the very next game, saved another break-point before wrapping things up.

In the final set, things went to serve till the sixth game when Putintseva cracked the Cirstea game open with back to back breaks.

This result follows a mixed start to the season for Putintseva. She had started things off with a couple of defeats at the United Cup but then reached the quarterfinal at the Hobart International where she lost to Anna Blinkova.

Can she now overturn her poor record against Pliskova?

Pliskova v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Pliskova starts a heavy favourite despite her poor form because of the manner of her first round win and her overall record against Putintseva. Expect Putintseva to push this into a third though.
