Kudermetova Manages Straight-Set Win against Zanevska

Having entered the Australian Open as one of the dark horses to watch out, Kudermetova got off to a solid start with a straight-set first round over Maryna Zanevska.

Sure, she was pushed hard in the second of those two sets but she needed only an hour and 38 minutes to carve out a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory that saw her through to the second round for the third year in running.

Kudermetova faced no break-points in the first set while usurping her opponent’s serve twice.

In the second, however, Kudermetova dropped her serve in the fifth game as Zanevska took a 4-2 lead. The Russian fought back to level things out in the eighth game before overturning a 2-1 deficit in the tie-breaker to win it 7-4.

The world number nine had earlier made the quarterfinal of the Auckland Open and was a semifinalist in Adelaide. Can she now make it to the third round for the third time in a row?

Fighting Qualifier Volynets Makes Second Round

Volynets had made it past the opening round at a Grand Slam only once before the start of this tournament – at the French Open last year. She had also made the main draw at Auckland earlier this year where she went down to Venus Williams but followed it up with a set of fighting performances in the qualifiers here.

With three successive three-set wins in the qualifiers, Volynets also looked battle-hardened coming into her opener here against the Aussie Evgeniya Rodina.

And that’s exactly how she played, carving out a 6-3, 6-2 win in an hour and 26 minutes.

Volynets was broken once apiece in each of the two sets, including in the first when she fell 0-2 behind but that was the only time that happened. The American broke right back and made it two breaks in a row to scoop up the set.

The second set was a lot easier as she ran away to a 5-1 lead and while she dropped her serve post that, another break followed.

Volynets’ best ranking before the start of this tournament was 109th but with this win, the 113th-ranked player can be expected to break into the top 100. Can she surprise Kudermetova though?

Kudermetova v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova will be looking to make it two straight-set wins in a row and should be a favourite to do just that. No trouble for the Russian here.
