Shelton Saves Match Point, Wins Dramatic Five-Setter on Debut

The impressive Ben Shelton pipped China’s Zhang Zhizhen in a dramatic five-setter to mark his dream debut at the Australian Open.

The 20-year-old, who stunned Casper Ruud in Cincinnati last year and won three Challenger titles from six finals, showed nerves of steel as he saved a match point on his serve at 4-5 (30-40) in the final set.

The match swung from one end to the other, with Zhang taking the opening set, thanks to a solitary break. Shelton rebounded in the next and then led by two sets to one after outplaying the Chinese in the third. Zhang dominated the fourth to tie the match once again.

After both players held serve over the first nine games, Zhang got a break point and a match point in the 10th. But he missed out on the opportunity and Shelton raced to victory in the final set tiebreak.

The 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10-4) victory came in three hours and 31 minutes. There was very little to choose between the two players. Shelton served 18 aces to Zhang’s 12 and hit 54 winners, seven more than the Chinese. Both players, however, broke each other three times in the match and made 45 unforced errors each.

Shelton in the end won 153 of the total 292 points in the match.

After recording his first Grand Slam win, Shelton will now look to maintain the intensity in the next round.

Jarry Upsets the 26th Seed

Nicolas Jarry won his first ever singles match at the Australian Open as the Chilean took down the 26th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in the opener.

Jarry, who came into the main draw through the qualifiers, had made two previous appearances in Melbourne, but on both the occasions he was dispatched in the first round.

However, this time he made sure he had an extended stay after a superlative display against a player who featured in the last 16 in last year.

The 27-year-old served 21 aces and struck 61 winners in the match, to demolish the Serb 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in just over two hours.

In what turned out to be a convincing performance, Jarry didn’t face a single break point in the match and converted 2 of 3.

He had qualified for the main draw following back-to-back come-from-behind wins over Otto Virtanen and Skatov, Timofey respectively and a straight sets win over Emilio Nava in the final qualifying round.

Jarry has produced better results on clay than on other surfaces in his career, but he has raised his level in Melbourne. How far can he go this year?

Shelton v Jarry Prediction and Tip

This is going to be an exciting contest. Both were brilliant in the first round and both will sense an opportunity to progress. It seems it is going to be another long affair for Shelton, but given how he has been playing over the last one year, he could edge past the Chilean to reach the third round.
