Sabalenka Into Maiden Australian Open Quarterfinal

Aryna Sabalenka ended Belinda Bencic’s seven-match winning streak and extended her perfect run in 2023 to 8-0 as she stormed into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.

A semifinalist in her last major in New York, Sabalenka has been in stunning form this year, having won eight in a row and not dropped a set yet. She won four consecutive matches to win the Adelaide International title in the tune-up to the Melbourne major.

Carrying that form into this tournament, the 24-year-old Belarusian scored crushing wins over Tereza Martincová, Shelby Rogers and Elise Mertens in the first three rounds respectively.

Against Bencic, the world no. 5 was off to a slow start as she conceded a break early in the first set. But she soon found her range and went on to break the Swiss player twice to take the opening set.

Sabalenka looked in complete control in the second set, breaking Bencic twice and taking the contest 7-5, 6-2.

The Belarusian has a poor record against Donna Vekic, having won once and lost five times against the Croatian. She even lost to Vekic in their only meeting in San Diego last year. So it ill be the Croatian going into the contest with the psychological advantage but given the form that Sabalenka is in at the moment, she is looking like a player to beat. Can she keep her perfect record in 2023 intact?

Sabalenka’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Tereza Martincová 6-1, 6-4
  • beat Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-1
  • beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-3
  • beat Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2

Vekic Overcomes Fruhvirtova Challenge

World no. 64 Donna Vekic held off a spirited challenge from 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday. The Croatian came back from a break down in the final set of the see-saw battle to knock out the Czech 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and seal a place in a Grand Slam quarterfinal for just the second time in her career.

It was in the 2019 U.S. Open when Vekic had reached the last eight, but she couldn’t go beyond that stage.

Like her quarterfinal opponent, Vekic, too, is unbeaten this season. She won all three of her matches at the United Cup and then won both of her exhibition matches in Kooyong as well, before embarking on a four-match win streak at the Australian Open.

Vekic edged out Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10-7) in the first set, before ousting 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-0 and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-2, 6-2 in the second and third round respectively.

Against Fruhvirtova, Vekic struck 42 winners, converted 5 of 6 break points, and saved 6 of 10 to win the match in two hours and seven minutes. While Vekic made 20 more unforced errors than the Czech’s 20, it was the 11 double faults from the world no. 82 that cost her dear. Vekic won the important moments in the contest to advance.

Showing inconsistent form in 2021 and hampered by injury last year, the 26-year-old saw a decline in the rankings, but she has been delivering consistent results ever since her return to the tour last year and is in extremely good form this year. A former top 20 player, Vekic is aiming to reach the semifinal of a Grand Slam for the first time. Can she keep her winning streak intact?

Vekic’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10-7)
  • beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-0
  • beat Nuria Parrizas-Diaz 6-2, 6-2
  • beat Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2, 1-6, 6-3
