Pliskova Eases Past Zhang
Karolina Pliskova moved into a second straight major quarterfinal with a straight sets win over China’s Zhang Shuai in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday.
Dominating the contest from the start, the 30th seed struck 12 aces and 33 winners to beat the 23rd seed, 6-0, 6-4.
While Pliskova didn’t look in trouble in the first set, Zhang got a break in the second to lead 2-4, but the Czech roared back, winning four games in a row. The win, which came in just 55 minutes, was the quickest so far in the tournament for the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who has not dropped a set in this year’s first major.
She trounced China’s Wang Xiyu 6-1, 6-3 in the first round, then knocked out Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 7-5 in the second before handing Varvara Gracheva a 6-4, 6-2 defeat in the third.
Pliskova will be featuring in the quarterfinals in Melbourne for the fourth time. Only once has she gone past the last eight stage, when she lost in the semifinals in 2019.
The Czech, who didn’t have an encouraging 2022, has begun the 2023 season well. Can she make it even better by reaching the final four in Melbourne? She has beaten Linette six-time at the senior level, and they are 2-1 at the lower level. Despite the dominance the world no. 31 won’t take it easy against Linette as the Pole gave her a tough fight in the U.S. Open last year.

Iga Swiatek may be out, but Magda Linette has kept the Polish hopes alive. The world no. 45 stunned the fourth seed Caroline Garcia in the fourth round on Monday to reach her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The 30-year-old, who had never made it past the third round of a major, was a double break down early in the first set. But she showed her fighting instincts and overcame the 0-3 start and forced the tiebreak. She outplayed Garcia in the tiebreak and took a one-set-to-love lead. In the second, Garcia saved a break point in the opening game, then three in the seventh, but she couldn’t save the break point that she faced in her next service game.
Linette’s hard work paid off as she knocked out the world no. 4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in an hour and 56 minutes.
The Pole, who went 3-1 in the United Cup, and lost her opener in Hobart is 7-2 in 2023. She began her campaign at the Australian Open with a straight sets win over Mayar Sherif. In her next match she came back from a set down to upset the 16th seed Anett Kontaveit, before scoring another straight sets win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.
