Paul Knocks Out Bautista Agut

He reached his first two Masters quarterfinals last year; now, Tommy Paul has made it to the last eight of a Grand slam tournament.

The world no. 35 knocked out the 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round on Monday to continue his surge in the tournament.

Paul struck 58 winners to Bautista Agut’s 35; saved 8 of 10 break points that he faced and converted 6 of 15 to register a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Spaniard. This is his fourth appearance in the Melbourne major and his best before this year was a third round appearance in 2020.

But this year has been different for the 25-year-old. He made a brisk start by beating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in the first round and then won a thrilling five-setter against 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Paul who won the first set in the match, saw the Spaniard win the next two, before he fought back to win the final two and clinch the contest  6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4.

In the third round, Paul cruised past compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

Can he go that far at the senior level? He is two wins away and will back himself to win the quarterfinal against Shelton. Paul’s a bit more experienced than Shelton and has done well at the top level over the last one year.

Shelton Holds off Wolf in Five

Ben Shelton’s fairy-tale run continued as he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on his debut.

The 20-year-old, who is playing just his second major, following the first round exit at the U.S. Open last year, edged out fellow American J.J. Wolf in a three-hour-and-50-minute fourth round contest on Monday.

Shelton hit 23 aces and 64 winners in a hard-hitting battle which also saw his opponent serve 19 aces and strike 60 winners. Eventually it was Shelton who came through. He saved both the break points that he faced in the match and converted 4 of 9 to close out the contest 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

It was the second five-setter that the lefty survived in the tournament. He had begun his campaign with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10-4) victory over China’s Zhang Zhizhen in the first round.

He put on another gutsy performance against Nicolás Jarry in the second round, beating the Chilean 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. He didn’t drop a set in the third round either, defeating local hope Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Shelton has struck 63 aces in the first four rounds and has shown great fighting spirit.

Ranked outside the top 500 a year ago, he has enjoyed an astronomical rise and is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of 89. Can he keep the dream run going?
