Tsitsipas Outclasses Lehecka

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas outclassed young Czech Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals on Tuesday to move into his third successive Australian Open semifinal.

This will be a fourth time in Melbourne when the Greek will be competing in the final four stage but he is yet to reach the summit clash. Can it happen this year? He is the top seed remaining in the men’s draw and is playing high-quality tennis, so there are huge expectations from him to cross the semifinal hurdle this year.

While the 21-year-old Lehecka didn’t allow Tsitsipas to just run away with the contest, the world no. 4 did a good job of winning the key moments in the match. He broke Lehecka once in each of the first and third sets and dominated the second set tiebreak to craft a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victory in two hours and 17 minutes.

Lehecka had 8 break points in the match, but Tsitsipas saved all of them to stay in control of the contest. It was Tsitsipas’ fourth straight sets win in the tournament. Only Jannik Sinner has been able to take a set of him and he won two of them in the fourth round. The Italian made a valiant comeback bid after losing the first two sets but went down fighting in the final set.

The Greek, who had a 61-24 record on the tour last year, is off to a 9-0 start this year. He had won all four of his singles matches at the United Cup ahead of the Australian Open.

Can he win 10th match in a row on Friday? He has a great chance of doing that, as he faces an opponent who has lost all five of their previous matches.

Tsitsipas’s Road to Semifinal

  • beat Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
  • beat Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3
  • beat Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3
  • beat Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) 6-4

Khachanov Advances After Korda Retires

No. 18 seed Karen Khachanov is into his second straight Grand Slam semifinal. The Russian was leading the United States’ Sebastian Korda 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-0 in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, when the latter was forced to withdraw due to a wrist injury.

Only twice has Khachanov reached this far in a major, with the last time being in New York in 2022, when he fell to Casper Ruud.

On Tuesday, the Olympic silver medallist served 12 aces and struck 27 winners before Korda’s dream of walking in his father’s footsteps ended in pain. Petr Korda had won the Australian Open title in 1998. Sebastian was within three wins of emulating his father’s feat. But it was Khachanov who had looked the better of the two and he continued his march forward in the tournament.

A winner of four Tour-level titles, Khachanov has displayed terrific form throughout the tournament. He outplayed Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets in the first round, held off Jason Kubler and Frances Tiafoe in back-to-back four-set matches, and then handed Yoshito Nishioka a straight sets drubbing in the round of 16.

Khachanov, who reached back-to-back quarterfinals in the two Adelaide tournaments to start the season, will be featuring in his first semifinal of the season.

Having never beaten Tsitsipas in his career, he will feel the pressure going into Friday’s clash, but given his current form and the motivation of reaching a major final may bring the best out of him.

Khachanov’s Road to Semifinal

  • beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-0
  • beat Jason Kubler 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2
  • beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9)
  • beat Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4)
  • beat Sebatian Korda 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-0 (ret.)
