Rybakina Dumps Out Ostapenko

Two days after knocking out the top seed Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina continued her surge at the Australian Open, as the Kazakh outplayed 17th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the last eight stage on Tuesday and moved into the semifinals of a Grand Slam for just the second time in her career.

The last time she had reached this far in a major, she had gone on to win the title at Wimbledon last year.

In Tuesday’s quarterfinal, Rybakina came out firing on all cylinders, as she got a break in the very first game. She went up by a double break in the fifth game and soon found herself leading 5-1 before sealing the rain-affected set 6-2.

The Latvian, a former French Open champion, found some form in the second set, as she broke early to lead 0-2, but her joy was short-lived as Rybakina fought back to win the next four games in a row. There were no more breaks in the match and the world no. 25 clinched the contest 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 19 minutes.

The aggressive Rybakina struck 11 aces and hit 24 winners in the match. She saved 7 of 8 break points that she faced and converted 4 of 6 that she held in the match.

The 22nd seed, who had never gone past the third round in her past three attempts in Melbourne is now two wins away from a second Grand Slam title. She has been in top form in the tournament, having played just one three-setter and that was in the third round against last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins.

Otherwise, she began with straight set wins over Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Kaja Juvan and then pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament in the fourth round when she knocked out the world no. 1 and last year’s semifinalist Swiatek 6-4, 6-4.

Next up is the two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka, whom she beat in their only meeting in Indian Wells last year. Can Rybakina get another win over the Belarusian?

Rybakina’s Road to Semifinal

  • beat beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-3
  • beat Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-1
  • beat Danielle Collins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2
  • beat Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4
  • beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4

Azarenka Powers Past Pegula

Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka is back into the semifinals after a convincing straight sets win over Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The Belarusian, who has never made it to the final four of the Australian Open since winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, controlled the match from start to finish.

The third seed Pegula, who had won all four of her previous matches in straight sets and was on an eight match winning streak, had conceded an early break in the first set. She did get the break back late in the set but was broken immediately as Azarenka took a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, both exchanged a break early, before the Belarusian raced away with the set and the match by winning four games in a row for a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Azarenka, who is also a three-time finalist at the U.S. Open is chasing her first major final since her runner-up finish in New York in 2020.

Can the 33-year-old go on to win a third major, 10 years after winning her last Grand Slam title? She has looked in ominous touch so far and with experience also on her side she is definitely a strong contender.

The straight sets quarterfinal win would have been a relief for her after she had to pull off come-from-behind three-set wins in the last two rounds, beating Madison Kays in the third round and Zhu Lin in the fourth. She seemed had won the first two matches against Sofia Kenin and Nadia Podoroska in straight sets.

Azarenka’s Road to Semifinal

  • beat Sofia Kenin 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)
  • beat Nadia Podoroska 6-1, 6-0
  • beat Madison Keys 1-6, 6-2, 6-1
  • beat Zhu Lin 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
  • beat Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-1
