Sabalenka Into Fourth Major Semifinal

Aryna Sabalenka extended her perfect record in 2023 to 9-0 as she dispatched Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The win for the Belarusian came in straight sets, but it wasn’t straight-forward, as Sabalenka needed an hour and 49 minutes to see off the world no. 64, 6-3, 6-2.

Both players struggled with their serves, with Sabalenka double faulting nine times in the match and Vekic double faulting 13 times. It was theses double faults that cost Vekic dear.

Sabalenka, who held 13 break points in the match, broke the Croatian twice in the first set and thrice in the second. Vekic, meanwhile, had 14 breaking chances but the world no. 5 saved 12 of them.

The Belarusian’s victory ended Vekic’s perfect 7-0 start in 2023, while extend Sabalenka’s streak. The 24-year-old had come into the tournament following her successful campaign in Adelaide, where she picked up her 11th career title.

This is the first time at the Australian Open and the fourth time in a major that Sabalenka has made it to the final four stage. She is yet to reach a major final, but has a great chance of making it to the summit clash in Melbourne this year. She is the highest seed remaining in the women’s draw and has been in menacing form this year, having not dropped a set yet.

She also has a superior 2-0 record against her semifinal opponent and will hold the psychological edge over the Pole.

Sabalenka’s run to her maiden semifinal in Melbourne included convincing wins over Tereza Martincová, Shelby Rogers, Elise Mertens and Belinda Bencic in the first four rounds respectively.

Can she take another step on Thursday towards her maiden major title?

  • beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-3

Linette Stuns Pliskova

Magda Linette’s impressive run at the Australian Open continued on Wednesday as the world no. 45 stunned former world no. 1 and two-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals.

Linette, who had never gone beyond the third round of a major, having made it that far six times, has been in top form this year. She had won 3 of her 4 matches in the United Cup and Wednesday’s win over Pliskova improved her 2023 record to 8-2.

Linette didn’t get off to a good start in the quarterfinal, dropping serve in the very first game of the match. But she recovered quickly and got the break back in the next game. She got herself in front with a second break in the sixth game of the set and then held on to take the opening set.

In the second set, Linette missed out on six break points and saved two over the first 10 games. But she managed to finally break the Czech in the 11th game before sealing the contest 6-3, 7-5.

The 30-year-old, who has won two WTA titles in her career, was the finalist at the Chennai Open last year. Pliskova was the fourth straight seeded player that Linette defeated in the tournament.

After beating the unseeded Mayar Sherif in straight sets the first round, Linette rallied past 16th Annet Kontaveit in a three-set second round contest. She then ousted the 19th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets, before outplaying the fourth seed Carolina Garcia in the round of 16.

The win over the 30th seed in the quarterfinal would have given her confidence a further boost. Can she pull of another shock win on Thursday?
