Djokovic Decimates Rublev

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic showed just why he is the undisputed king of Melbourne as the Serb tormented Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The world no. 5 saved all five break points that he faced in the match and converted 5 of 14 to beat the Russian 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in a two-hour contest. Rublev is now 0-7 in grand slam quarterfinals, while Djokovic extended his unbeaten run in 2023 to 10 matches.

Djokovic, who is chasing his record-extending 10th Australian Open title this year, had won his 92nd tour-level title at the Adelaide International in the tune-up to the first major of 2023.

Wednesday’s win extended the 35-year-old’s unbeaten run to 26 matches at the Australian Open. He didn’t take part in last year’s event due to his COVID vaccine status, but had won three consecutive titles from 2019 to 2021. Overall, the 21-time major winner has an enviable 87-8 record in the Melbourne major and that record is likely to improve further over the next four days.

Djokovic has dropped just one set on his way to the semifinals. Enzo Couacaud took him to four sets in the second round. Otherwise, it’s been a smooth sailing for the former no. 1, who has played with great intensity, particularly in the last two rounds.

Against Rublev, Djokovic struck 14 aces and 32 winners and won 80% points on the back of his first serve. He will now be aiming to reach a 33rd major final, when he plays Tommy Paul on Friday.

He has never played Paul before, but give his experience, form and record at the Australian Open, he is expected to make quick work of the American.

Djokovic’s Road to Semifinal

  • beat Roberto Carballés Baena 6-3, 6-4, 6-0
  • beat Enzo Couacaud 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-0
  • beat Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-4
  • beat Alex De Minaur 6-2, 6-1, 6-2
  • beat Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-4

Paul Wins All-American Quarterfinal

World no. 35 Tommy Paul withstood 24 aces before holding off Ben Shelton in an all-American semifinal on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal two days ago, now finds himself in a major semifinal.

In a three-hour-plus contest, Paul edged Shelton in a closely contested first set tiebreak and then led by two-sets-to-love after getting the solitary break of the second set. Shelton found himself a break down early in the third, but he wasn’t ready to go down easily. He fought back to break Paul twice and keep the match alive. However, Paul got a break in the very first game of the fourth set and didn’t allow another break in the match to win 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Paul, who reached his first two Masters quarterfinals last year, has raised his level this year. He improved to 6-1 in 2023 following Wednesday’s win.

Paul’s been playing aggressively throughout the tournament. He made a quick start by beating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in the first round and then edged past 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4. He was dominant against compatriot Jenson Brooksby in the third round, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 and then knocked out 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5  in the fourth round.

He has reached two Grand Slam finals at the junior level, winning in Roland Garros and finishing runner-up in New York in 2015.

Can he reach his first at the senior level? He has an uphill task ahead of him.

Paul’s Road to Semifinal
