Sabalenka Into Maiden Grand Slam Final

She had never won a semifinal at a major before, but on Thursday, Aryna Sabalenka made it happen. The Belarusian knocked out surprise semifinalist Magda Linette in straight sets to reach her first-ever Grand Slam final.

The win extended the fifth seed’s current streak to 10 matches and she has now won 20 sets in a row. Sabalenka had won four matches on the trot to pick her 11th career title in her season opener in Adelaide International 1.

She has continued that form at the Australian Open, convincingly defeating her first six opponents. It will be interesting to see if Sabalenka can remain perfect in 2023 with a win over Rybakina in the final on Saturday.

She enjoys a 3-0 record against the Kazakh, but all three of those matches went the distance with Sabalenka winning the decider.

Ranked no. 5 in the world, Sabalenka also had a perfect record against Linette before the semifinal and she extended it on Thursday to lead the head-to-head rivalry 3-0. While the first two matches were routs, the Belarusian had to work hard for the most recent win over the Pole.

The 24-year-old was a break down after the very first game of the match, but she drew level in the fourth game and then dominated the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead. In the second set, the 30-year-old Linette held serve in the first game, but then lost the next five games in a row. Sabalenka was in the box seat and even though she missed out on three match points in the seventh game, she capitalised on one in the next game to clinch the match 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

The one-hour-and-33-minute contest saw Sabalenka hit 33 winners to just 9 from Linette. She also struck 6 aces and converted 3 of 7 break points while saving 3 of 4.

She has been terrific form throughout the tournament, breezing past Tereza Martincová, Shelby Rogers, Elise Mertens, Belinda Bencic and Donna Vekic in the previous rounds.

Can she win her first-ever Grand Slam title on Saturday?

Sabalenka’s Road to Final

  • beat Tereza Martincová 6-1, 6-4
  • beat Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-1
  • beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-3
  • beat Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-2
  • beat Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-2
  • beat Magda Linette 7-6 (7-1), 6-2

Rybakina Reaches Second Major Final

Last year’s Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is on the cusp of another Grand Slam glory. The Kazakh ended Victoria Azarenka’s bid for a third Australian Open title, and a first since 2013, when she ousted the Belarusian in straight sets in the semifinals on Thursday.

In a neck-and-neck semifinal contest, Azarenka was the first to go up a break in the first set, but Rybakina won the next three games in a row to take control of the set. The Kazakh then missed out on a set point on her serve as Azarenka broke back to draw level. The tiebreak was a close affair, with Rybakina dominating early. Azarenka came back to stay in the contest, but the Kazakh eventually held her nerves to serve out the first set.

In the second, it was the world no. 25 who built a comfortable 5-2 lead, thanks to a double break. Azarenka wasn’t ready to go down easily and pulled a break back to make things interesting, but Rybakina broke again in the next game to take the contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

It’s been a tough run to the final for the Kazakh, who had to beat last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins in the third round, the world no. 1 and the reigning French and U.S. Open champion Iga Swiatek in the fourth round and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. Having beaten another past Grand Slam champion in the semifinal, she would be extremely confident heading into the final.

Can she capture her second major title?

Rybakina’s Road to Final

  • beat beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-3
  • beat Kaja Juvan 6-2, 6-1
  • beat Danielle Collins 6-2, 5-7, 6-2
  • beat Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4
  • beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4
  • beat Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (7-4), 6-3
