Tsurenko won their only meeting in Dubai in 2019.

Zhu Wins Battle of Chinese Players

China’s Lin Zhu reached her maiden WTA final by defeating compatriot Wang Xinyu in the semifinals of the Hua Hin Open on Saturday.

The match started with three breaks of serve with Zhu breaking twice. She extended that lead further with a third break in the seventh game before seeing off the set.

In the second, the world no. 81 Wang came back from a break down twice to draw level at 3-3 but the world no. 54 eventually found another break and then didn’t lose serve again in the match to register a 6-2, 6-4 victory in one hour and 36 minutes.

Zhu, who has won a WTA 125 title in Seoul in 2021, has 15 ITF titles from 27 finals. The 29-year-old will be competing in her first WTA Tour final on Sunday.

She has had a brilliant start to 2023 and is 9-3 so far this season, thanks to her runs to the quarterfinals in Auckland, round of 16 at the Australian Open and the final in Thailand.

Zhu began her campaign with a come-from-behind win over Xiyu Wang, beating the third seed 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Since then she has won all her matches in straight sets, beating Jang Su-jeong of Korea in round 2, Tamara Zidanšek in the quarterfinals and the seventh seed in the semifinal on Saturday.

Tsurenko Returns to a WTA Final After Four Years

Lesia Tsurenko advanced to her first final in four years after Bianca Andreescu retired from their semifinal clash on Saturday.

A four-time winner on the tour, Tsurenko last played in a final in Brisbane in 2019, which she lost to Karolina Pliskova. That remains the only final that the Ukrainian has lost in her career so far.

She won her first title in Istanbul in 2015, then in Guangzhou in 2015 before picking back-to-back titles in Acapulco in 2017 and 2018. All six of her finals so far have come on hard courts. Can she win her fifth title on Sunday?

She had a tough start in the tournament but showed great resolve in seeing off Ysaline Bonaventure and the fourth seed Anna Kalinskaya in the first two rounds. Both of those matches had gone the distance.

Tsurenko, however, had an easy outing in the quarterfinal, defeating Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-1, before putting up an impressive show against the top seed in the semifinal on Saturday. The match started with four consecutive breaks of serve as both Tsurenko and Andreescu went toe-to-toe, but it was the Ukrainian who took control at the back end of the opening set, winning four consecutive games and going one-set up.

Carrying that momentum into the second set, Tsurenko won the first four games in a row before the Canadian quit the contest due to an injury.

Tsurenko is 4-1 in the main draws this year and 10-1 from all contests. Can she win her fifth career title on Sunday?

Zhu v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Zhu has had an excellent start this year, consistently scoring wins over quality players. One of those wins came against Maria Sakkari in the third round of the Australian Open. She has been very good in this tournament as well and will be the favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday.
