Nikoloz Basilashvili v Constant Lestienne Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the Challenger level in 2015 where Lestienne had won on clay. They were supposed to play in the qualifiers of the Metz Open the following year but Lestienne withdrew from that match.

He was once ranked 16th in the world but Basilashvili’s fall from a high-performing, title-winning player to one struggling to even win matches has been rather spectacular.
It was in 2021 that Basilashvili had gone on to lift titles in Doha and Munich. This year he is nought from three, having lost all his three matches played so far.
The first of those defeats at the hands of Marco Cecchinato came at the Pune Open where he was 9/20 favourite to win it, and he then retired from his qualifier against Mikael Ymer at Adelaide.
Basilashvili had a direct entry at the Australian Open – something he might not get very soon at Grand Slams if he doesn’t start winning matches – but a tough opener against Taylor Fritz put paid to his hopes there.

Lestienne Hits a Career-High
Prior to the previous season, Lestienne had never risen to above 142nd on the ATP charts. It was a ranking he had got himself in 2019.
He fell back to outside the top 200 in 2020 and remained there till the February of last season.
It was then that Lestienne started winning matches – and titles – on the Challenger circuit in a heap and that helped him take a late leap in his rankings. Now aged 30 and following three Challenger title victories last season, Lestienne has risen to a career-best of 52nd in the world.
A semifinal at the Auckland Open earlier this year and a first ever match win in a Grand Slam at the Australian Open have propelled him forward. A couple of victories here, including this one against a struggling Basilashvili could help Lestienne break into the top 50 on the charts.
He will be charged up at his home tournament too.
