Alexander Bublik v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head

They are 1-1 at the tour level, but Bublik has also won a lower level contest, so he has an overall edge of 2-1.

Bublik Off to a 0-5 Start

Last year, Alexander Bublik picked up his maiden ATP title by scoring a shock win over Alexander Zverev in the Montpellier final.

The Kazakh begins his title defence on Monday but he doesn’t bring an encouraging form into this year’s tournament. As we were writing the preview, Bublik was preparing to play in the reverse singles match against Chile’s Cristian Garin at the Davis Cup with hopes of registering his first win of 2023.

Until Friday, Bublik had lost all five of his matches in 2023, extending his losing streak to seven matches. The last time he had won a match was in the second round in Basel last October. He fell in the quarterfinal of that tournament and since then he lost seven in a row.

This year, Bublik lost both his matches at the United Cup to Stan Wawrinka and Hubert Hurkacz respectively. The world no. 36 then fell to David Goffin in Auckland before losing a five-set thriller against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round of the Australian Open.

His most recent defeat came in the Davis Cup, when he lost to Nicolas Jarry of Chile.

He will be desperate to get into some form early in Montpellier as he aims to win a second title in his career. He has played in seven finals and lost six of them.

Barrere Comes in As Quimper Champion

Facing Bublik will be world no. 76 Gregoire Barrere.

The Frenchman won the Quimper Challenger at the end of last month, defeating compatriot Arthur Fils in the final. Thanks to the five wins in the tournament, he is 8-3 overall this season.

Barrere, who failed to qualify for Adelaide, came through the qualifier in Auckland but lost in the round of 16. He then made a first round exit from the Australian Open before embarking on a successful Quimper campaign.

The title was his sixth Challenger title from 13 finals. The 28-year-old had won two Challenger titles from five finals las year. But he played very little at the tour level.

Barrere is 3-3 in Montpellier. He lost in the opening round in 2017, reached the quarterfinal in 2020 and fell in the round of 16 in 2021. Can he go deep this year?

Bublik v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Bublik is the defending champion and there will be expectations from him to deliver again. He is more experienced than his opponent and should be back to his winning ways in the first round.
