Vekic Enjoying her Resurgence

Donna Vekic, current World No. 33, is off to a superb start in 2023. She is 7-1 and is coming on the back of two quarterfinal runs in January.

The first was in the United Cup, where she guided Croatia with wins over Alize Cornet, Maria Carle, and Despina Papamichail – all in straight sets.

The next instance was in the Australian Open, where she fell to the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka, but not before beating the likes of Liudmila Samsonova, Linda Fruhvirtova, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, and Oksana Selekhmetova.

After enduring a tumultuous spell in 2022 – owing to her surgery – the 26-year-old bounced back from June onwards. Her prominent results include a quarterfinal showing in Tallinn and Birmingham and the runner-up feat in San Diego. Vekic, as a qualifier, dismissed some big names such as Maria Sakkari, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Danielle Collins. She lost to Iga Swiatek but not before taking a rare set from the Pole.

Korpatsch Looking for Wins

Tamara Korpatsch, current World No. 78, enjoyed a terrific spell in 2022. She clocked 47 wins and lost 28 matches – while picking up three titles and two runner-up feats.

Her biggest trophy came in the Budapest Challenger, followed by a couple of ITF titles. The 27-year-old also reached the final in Marbella 125 and ITF Madrid.

On the WTA side, Tamara is still seeking big wins, with her best showing being a round-two stint in WTA Stuttgart. So far in 2023, she featured in three tournaments but failed to bag a victory.

In Adelaide and Hobart, Tamara began as a qualifier but lost to Storm Hunter and Kristina Kucova. In the Aus Open, she was beaten by Emma Raducanu in the first round.

Vekic v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip

Vekic is the clear favourite here; she has the experience, momentum, and plenty of top-tier wins to move into round two comfortably. Korpatsch, on her part, may put up a fight but a win for the German seems unlikely.
