Modest Beginnings to 2023 for van Uytvanck

She did kick-start the season well enough with a couple of wins at the United Cup, and while they were against players ranked 399th and 154th in the world, van Uytvanck would have been reasonably happy with her effort there.

Following that, however, things haven’t looked as well for van Uytvanck as she would have liked with the Belgian winning just two of her next three matches.

A quarterfinalist here in 2021 which was the last time she had played in this tournament, van Uytvanck fell in the second round in Hobart and again at the same stage at Lyon last week too. Sandwiching those two performances was an opening exit at the Australian Open.

To be fair to van Uytvanck, two of three defeats have come to players of the pedigree of Caroline Garcia and Petra Kvitova. Can she turn things around against a rising star who has already hit her career-best ranking of 50th in the world this season?

Noskova Shrugs Australian Open Exit Off

After climbing up from 265th in the world last season to ending the year ranked 102nd on the WTA charts, Noskova has galloped into the top 50 this season.

And that has been down to her showing at the Adelaide International where, as a qualifier, she marched into the final. It wasn’t just that she won six matches in a row to get there but also the players she defeated in its wake.

Daria Kasatkina, Victoria Azarenka and Ons Jabeur were all pushed away before it took a fighting Aryna Sabalenka to end Noskova’s challenge.

And while an exhausted Noskova then lost in the very first qualifier at the Australian Open, she overcame Garbine Muguruza and Mayar Sherif in the Lyon Open last week to make the quarterfinals.

It will be interesting to see if the world number 50 can continue with her run here but she sure will start a favourite to win her opener.

van Uytvanck v Noskova Prediction and Tip

While van Uytvanck is 8/5 underdog to win this, she could give the favourite Noskova a run for her money. Expect a three-setter here.
