Guido Pella v Andrea Vavassori Head to Head

This will be the first career meeting between the unranked Guido Pella and the World No. 221 Andrea Vavassori.

Pella Coming Back From Injury

Guido Pella had missed the entire 2022 season due to a chronic knee injury and only returned to play one tournament – the Montevideo Challenger – in November, losing to compatriot Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Pella is currently without a ranking having lost all his points garnered in the previous two seasons. In fact, his 2021 campaign was dreadful to say the least, finishing with a win-loss record 8-18.

The 32-year-old has a long road to making up for that lost time. He’s taken a wild card at his home tournament in Cordoba – one of the very few places where Pella has actually made a Tour-level final (lost to Londero in 2019).

It will be interesting to see how Pella’s knee will respond to the physical demands of playing on clay.

Vavassori Qualifies for Main Draw

This will be Andrea Vavassori’s third main draw appearance at Tour level. At 27, it almost felt like time was not on his side. The Italian plays predominantly on the Challenger Tour and is a seasoned doubles specialist at that level.

But he has a knack for producing the odd upset in singles. Last year he made two finals in back-to-back tournaments on clay and was extremely unfortunate when he came within one tiebreak from winning in the Cordenons Challenger.

That disappointment has only fuelled his motivation to go for even bigger accomplishments this year. Given the unpredictable nature of the Cordoba Open and the list of former champions, it would shock any of us if we witness another first-time ATP titlist this weekend.

Vavassori has had to scratch and claw his way into the main draw in Cordoba, beating Andrea Pellegrino and then Ugo Carabelli to earn his spot.

Pella v Vavassori Prediction and Tip

It’s a long road from here for Guido Pella, almost as if he is starting his second coming from scratch. Vavassori might not get a better chance to score a rare main draw win on the ATP Tour.
