Qinwen Zheng v Rebecca Marino Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two – including one at the San Diego Open qualifier last year and the first round in Toronto 2022. Both were won by Zheng.

Qinwen would have been expected to do a lot better than she has in the early part of the season and she enters the second month of the year with a lot more hope but not a lot of positive results from January.

The 20-year-old featured in three tournaments in January and made it to the second round at each of them. Unfortunately for her, Qinwen failed to do a lot more than that.

At the Adelaide International, Qinwen scraped past Anett Kontaveit but fell to Victoria Azarenka in the second round. She then needed to make it through the qualifiers at the Adelaide International 2 and needed three sets to get past Shelby Rogers in her opener.

This time, it was Petra Kvitova who got the better of her in round two.

And then came the biggest shock of them all as Qinwen lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Bernarda Pera despite starting out a 1/3 favourite in the encounter.

Marino Aiming to Double Her Win Count for 2023

Marino made it through to the main draw with a couple of qualifying wins, defeating Margarita Betova and Ysaline Bonaventure to seal her first round place.

Before that, however, Marino had won just one main draw match for the season and it had come in Auckland where she started off the year with a straight-set victory over Dalma Galfi.

This was followed by a loss to Bonaventure – whom she would defeat in the qualifiers here – and another couple of first round losses at the Hobart International and Australian Open.

She has a tough opening against Zheng here but has defeated players like Madison Keys in recent years which should give her bit of a confidence coming into this one.

Zheng v Marino Prediction and Tip

Zheng can be tipped to continue winning her first round matches with a straight-set victory coming the Chinese player’s way here.
