Mackenzie McDonald v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

McDonald and Verdasco have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

McDonald Starts Strong in 2023

After an underwhelming season in 2022, McDonald looked to have started this year off on a much better note. The highlight of the season was McDonald’s win over Rafael Nadal which took him to the third round despite the defending champion having been struggling with his fitness issues during the encounter.

Earlier in the year, McDonald had made the second round at both, the Adelaide International 1 and 2, before falling to Yoshihito Nishioka and Mikael Ymer respectively.

It was Nishioka who put McDonald out of the Australian Open in round three as well before McDonald returned last week to win his only singles match at the Davis Cup. It helped USA come through against Uzbekistan.

McDonald resumes ATP action against a player who last won a main draw match in September 2022. Surely, the American will have high hopes of his chances.

Verdasco Makes Maiden Main Draw for the Season

Not that Verdasco has played a lot anyway but it’s taken him nearly six weeks this season to enter the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time in 2023.

His previous – and only – appearance of the year came at the Australian Open where Verdasco went out in the second qualifying round.

Once ranked seventh in the world, the 39-year-old Verdasco is in the twilight of his career and doesn’t often play at the highest level but take nothing away from the fight he has shown. Only last year, Verdasco won a Challenger title in Monterrey.

Here, in Dallas, Verdasco defeated Americans Evan Zhu and Mitchell Krueger to make the main draw. Can he take down a third American in a row?

McDonald v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

McDonald is our pick to win this but Verdasco to put up a scrappy display that pushes his American opponent hard.
