This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Errani Makes it Past Qualifiers

Former World No. 5 Sara Errani is set to compete in her Linz main draw for the first time since 2011. Her best results here have been a couple of quarterfinal runs in 2009 and 2010.

The 35-year-old is still strong and looks to build on a decent 2022 season that saw her close at 33-29 with a Challenger title from Contrexeville. Errani also fared well on the doubles circuit, reaching the final in Melbourne Summer Set.

Now ranked #106, the Italian is looking to leave her mark in Linz and lucky for her, she has been handed a relatively simpler match in the opener. She started as a qualifier over the weekend and beat Denisa Hindova and Andrea Gamiz to clear the prelims.

Errani arrived for the tournament after a lacklustre start to the year; she is 2-3 with all five matches taking place in the qualifiers in Lyon, Melbourne, and Auckland.

Friedsam in a Similar Boat

29-year-old Anna-Lena Friedsam also started in the qualies, dismissing Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Varvara Gracheva.

Like Sara, the German has spent the 2023 spell competing in the preliminary matches. In the Australian Open, she lost to Asia Muhammad in the second qualifying match, while in Lyon most recently, she fell to Kaja Juvan in the opener.

She is the current World No. 124 who is now hoping to deliver a turnaround in Linz. For what it’s worth, she was the runner-up in 2015 – losing in the final to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Since then, Friedsam has salvaged just one more WTA singles finals – the 2020 Lyon Open.

She did close the 2022 tour positively, reaching the finals in Midland and Angers Challengers.

Errani v Friedsam Prediction and Tip

Errani, as a Grand Slam finalist and former top-five player, has plenty of experience to back her play. She will start this one as the favourite, but Friedsam is just as capable of toppling her adversary – especially considering the lack of momentum. Expect a close encounter.
