Defending Champion Ramos Vinolas Without a Win This Season

The winner of Cordoba Open last season, Ramos-Vinolas enters this year’s competition desperate to notch up a match victory. Because as things stand right now, the Spaniard has played four matches this year and lost every single one of them.

Ramos-Vinolas started his 2023 campaign for Spain in the United Cup but went down to Jason Kubler and Dan Evans.

At the Adelaide International, the tournament he next participated in, Ramos-Vinolas made it to the third set tie-breaker of the opening round but still could not put it across John Millman.

And then at the Australian Open, the world number 54 fell to Maxime Cressy in his opener.

Here, Ramos-Vinolas had an opening round bye which means the wait for that win has been extended even further. And now that he faces a difficult opponent in the form of another clay-court specialist, things might not be that straightforward.

Lajovic Goes Past Varillas

After kick-starting his season with two successive hardcourt defeats as well, Lajovic finally notched up his first win of the season in the first round here.

Lajovic defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in his opener, overcoming his Peruvian opponent 7-6 (3), 6-3 to make it to the round of 16.

In a match which lasted two hours and four minutes, Lajovic faced 10 break-points on his serve but managed to save eight of them. Both times he was broken was in the first set but he never let go of the control despite losing the initiative from 4-1 in the first set.

Lajovic saved a couple of set-points on his serve in the ninth game before taking the set in a tie-breaker. Following this, all he needed was an early break in the second set and he carved out a victory soon enough.

Can he pull something like this off in the second round too?

Ramos Vinolas v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between the two but Ramos-Vinolas has won the title here and will know his way around this. Expect him to edge past Lajovic.
