Can Bautista Agut Go All the Way?

The Montpellier Open is one of Bautista Agut’s favorite tournaments. February in particular has never been a dull moment for the Spaniard.

Bautista Agut won the biggest title of his career at the Dubai Championships in February, as well as barreling to two titles in Doha. Furthermore, the Spaniard was a victor of the Sofia Open in 2016 when the event was staged just after the Australian Open.

So if you are looking to make some smart money this week, the Spaniard ticks all the boxes of a potential outright winner in Montpellier.

And his record in this tournament is not shabby either. He’s been to a final here back in 2021 losing to David Goffin. And last year he reached the quarterfinal.

Fils Shocks Gasquet

In a match pitting 18-year-old Arthur Fils and 36-year-old Richard Gasquet, it felt like a complete mismatch. Not just in age or ranking, but Gasquet was the most decorated player in the history of the Montpellier Open.

The experienced one-hander had won the joint-most titles at the event and had the most wins of any player. But enter Arthur Fils, the fearless prodigy who stunned the master in his backyard, winning 7-5 7-5 in front of an exuberant and bewildered crowd.

Fils was a menace from the baseline. At first, he appeared to show far too much respect for Gasquet, going down a break. But once he composed himself, his power broke down of the Tour’s best one-handed backhand.

He finished the match with a break to love ensuring his Montpellier debut was one he will live long to cherish for the rest of his life. He will now have the chance to advance even further when he plays Roberto Bautista Agut.

Bautista Agut v Fils Prediction and Tip

Fils was largely underestimated in his opening match but wore down his countryman Gasquet with his incredible ground stroke power. Bautista Agut, however, is a superior defender and should find a way to neutralize the young Frenchman’s aggression.
