Donna Vekic v Madison Brengle Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the clay of Charleston nearly eight years ago, Brengle winning in straight sets,

Australian Quarter-Finalist Vekic Begins Her Campaign

Vekic is playing in her first tournament since reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where she was beaten by the eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka.

That had matched her previous best at a Grand Slam, achieved at the US Open in 2019.

Not that counted for anything in her first round match with the German Tamara Korpatsch, ranked 81 in the world currently.

In fact, it was Korpatsch who had the better of the early exchanges, and Vekic was forced to save break points in her opening service game and when serving to stay in the set. However, having safely navigated those obstacles, she managed to win the subsequent tie-break.

When the German broke Vekic at the start of the second set, it looked like a comeback was on the cards. But then Korpatsch’s form deserted her, and she failed to win another game.

In the end, Vekic enjoyed a comfortable win, and can look forward to her encounter with Brengle.

Brengle Snaps Her Losing Streak

Brengle came into this tournament off the back of a poor run of form, and she had yet to win a match all year in four previous attempts.

That run included first round defeats at the Australian Open and in Lyon last week.

She would have been glad to put that behind her by beating Julia Grabher of Austria, the world number 90, in the first set, although she did not have things all her own way, especially in the first set.

The match began with the pair swapping breaks, before Brengle fell a break down.

The Austrian could not take advantage though, and dropped her own serve immediately. Both women had further break opportunities, could not take them, and it required a tie-break to separate them, with Grabher faltering on serve.

Break points continued to come and go in the second set, but the tide was turning in favour of the American, and she broke finally in the sixth game. Another break helped her seal the win in style.

Vekic v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Although Brengle won their previous match, that was on clay and some years ago. In terms of current form, Vekic would appear to be the favourite after her exploits in Melbourne, whereas the American has just come off a losing streak.
