Sixth seed Beatriz Haddad Maia bounced back to beat Marie Bouzkova in a two-hour-and-27-minute first round contest on Tuesday.
The Brazilian had an early break in the first set, but the world no. 26 made a strong comeback late in the set, breaking her opponent twice and seizing the initiative.
With a set down, the world no. 14 raised her level in the next set. She put pressure on the Czech from the very first game and succeeded in breaking her twice to draw level at one-set all. The momentum had shifted towards the left-hander and she raced away with the final set in no time.
Haddad Maia dropped just six service points and two return points in the final set to register a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.
The win ended the 26-year-old’s two-match losing streak. Haddad Maia had begun the season with four wins on the trot, winning both her matches at the United Cup and two more matches in Adelaide-2. But a quarterfinal defeat in Adelaide-2 followed by a first round exit from the Australian Open had halted her momentum.
Currently sitting on a career-high ranking of 14, she will be happy with the way she dispatched Bouzkova in the opener. Can she continue her charge in the tournament?

Putintseva Sends Andreescu Packing
Carrying her qualifying round form into the main draw, Yulia Putintseva knocked out Bianca Andreescu in straight sets on Tuesday to enter the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open.
The Kazakh, who had beaten Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 7-5, and Nigina Abduraimova 6-2, 6-2 in the two qualifying rounds respectively, needed an hour and 40 minutes to beat the former U.S. Open champion.
The Canadian went up a break thrice in the first set, but Putintseva was equal to her task on all the three occasions. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which was dominated by the world no. 45, who had built a 6-0 lead before winning 7-2.
Putintseva didn’t relent in the next set and raced to a 4-0 lead. Andreescu did get on the board but couldn’t break the Kazakh, who won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Putintseva is now 6-5 from all her matches in 2023. A two-time champion on the tour, she made it to the last eight in Hobart and the second round of the Australian Open this year.
Having got into a nice rhythm, she will be eyeing an upset in the next round.

Haddad Maia has been one of the most improved players over the last one year. She won her first two WTA titles in 2022 and also made it to her first ever WTA 1000 final in Toronto. She also had a brilliant start to 2023. She did suffer a couple of setbacks recently, but a good win over Bouzkova would have restored her confidence. She will be the favourite against Putintseva on Thursday.
