Garin Secures Big Win Over Martinez

In one of the picks of the first-round matches at the Cordoba Open, Cristian Garin locked horns against Pedro Martinez, with both players regarded among the most competitive performers on clay at these low-key 250 tournaments.

Martinez, who won his maiden ATP title in Santiago last year, was looking for a strong start to his Golden Swing. But it was Garin who had the last laugh as he won 7-6 2-6 6-0 in two hours and 42 minutes.

Both players were playing on clay for the first time in a while and struggled to get into a rhythm early on. Twice they exchanged breaks in the first set, but Garin composed himself to dominate the tiebreak.

The second set went by like a flash as Martinez regained his footing, breaking Garin in game 5 and later on in game 7 to level the match.

But in the decider, the Spaniard struggled mightily. For a match that was too close to call a few minutes earlier turned into one-way traffic as the Chilean produced a near-perfect set of tennis to win the match.

Sousa Stuns Etcheverry

After Portugal’s disappointing defeat in the Davis Cup qualifiers, a deflated Joao Sousa had no business winning his opening-round match at the Cordoba Open.

Sousa had lost his two singles rubbers against the Czech as Portugal missed out on appearing at the Davis Cup Finals later this year for the first time in history.

But Sousa beat jet lag and overcame the heartbreak in Maia. He went on and caused a major upset by eliminating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in three sets in a three-hour thriller.

The Portuguese veteran had been without a Tour-level win since September and came from a set and break down to win 3-6 7-6 6-4 and progressed to the second round.

Sousa served six aces, won 78%  first-serve points, and broke serve six times.

Garin v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Sousa surpassed everyone’s expectations winning his first ATP match since September. But the bad news for him is that Garin has found his groove with that massive win over Martinez. Expect the Chilean to roll.
