Nikoloz Basilashvili v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two previous meetings. Basilashvili won in Metz in 2016, while Barrere won in Montpellier in 2021.

Basilashvili Earns First Win of the Season

Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili fought back from a set down to oust France’s Constant Lestienne in the first round on Tuesday.

Edged out in the first set tiebreak by the world no. 48, the world no. 87 bounced back in the second and then overcame an early setback in the final set before racing to a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Basilashvili converted seven of 16 break points and saved five of nine as he registered his first win of the season. He had begun 2023 with three straight losses.

The 30-year-old lost his opening round matches in Pune, Adelaide-2 (through retirement) and the Australian Open.

A five-time champion from nine finals on the tour, the former world no. 16 reached his only final of 2022 in Qatar. Apart from that runner-up finish he had an otherwise poor season, finishing with a 14-29 record at the tour level. Things didn’t start well at the start of the new season but now that he has got a win can he climb back the rankings?

Barrere Knocks Out Defending Champion

Local favourite Gregoire Barrere battled past sixth seed and defending champion Alexander Bublik in a two hour and 30 minute first round contest on Wednesday.

Barrere missed out on three match point opportunities in the second set tiebreak with the world no. 50 staging a comeback and tying the match at one-set all. The deciding set also needed a tiebreak to separate the two players but this time it was the Frenchman who built a 6-0 lead. Bublik threatened briefly, saving three match points, but Barrere converted the next to seal a 6-4, 6-7 (12-14), 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Barrere was out-aced 5-19 by the defending champion but eventually he won the crucial moments to stay in the tournament.

The 28-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist in Montpellier in 2020, is in terrific form at the moment as he won the Quimper Challenger in the last week of January for his sixth title at that level.

He is a bit inexperienced at the tour level and a 15-33 overall career record on the tour is a testament of that. This year he improved to 2-2 on the tour, following the first round win.

Basilashvili v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Given Basilashvili’s extended struggles, it will be a huge task  him to beat the in-form Barrere. Although the Frenchman won at the Challenger level, the win over Bublik would have been a huge confidence booster. Expect a tough game with the Frenchman coming out on top.
