Giron Makes Hard Work of Beating Qualifier

Giron has earned the reputation of being one of the most consistent performers on tour, even if his defeat to Brandon Nakashima in the final of San Diego last year is the closest he has come to winning a senior title.

But he was made to work a much harder than he might have expected to beat the American qualifier, Alex Rybakov, the world number 378, in their first round match.

Giron, though, was able to claim the first set with the only break – both men had other break points but were not able to convert them.

Serve continued to dominate the second set, until Giron broke again, giving him the chance to serve for the match.

Rybakov responded to the challenge by breaking back and he went onto dominate the subsequent tie-break.

Fortunately for Giron, he was able to regroup and use his experience to clear his head.

He broke Rybakov once and then again, and, in the end, won the third set for the loss of just one game.

Otte Ends Losing Run

Otte came into Dallas looking for only his second win of the year, and his first since New Year’s day.

Since winning his opening match in the United Cup for Germany, he had lost all of the subsequent ones that he had played, which included a first round defeat at the Australian Open in four sets to a Chinese qualifier.

He would, therefore, have been glad to end that losing run, even if his victory against the American Christopher Eubanks, the world number 104, was not totally convincing.

The German started well, though, breaking Eubanks in the opening game of the match, and consolidating his advantage to take the first set.

Eubnaks hit back with a break of his own early in the second set, but, when serving for the second set, he was broken himself. However, before Otte had a chance to celebrate, he dropped his own serve again, and the match was level.

Unfortunately for Eubanks his level dropped in the third set, and Otte was able to break him twice and close out the match.

It was comfortable in the end, but Otte had been made to work for the win.

Giron v Otte Prediction and Tip

Both men were made to work for their first round wins, but Giron is the higher ranked player and, in conditions that suit his natural game,  the American can be expected to progress to the quarter-finals.
