Juan Manuel Cerundolo v Hugo Dellien Head to Head

All their three previous meetings have come on the Challenger circuit and Cerundolo leads 2-1. The last of these meetings came in Concepcion in the lead-up to this tournament where Dellien had clinched the match in straight sets.

Cerundolo Hoping to Continue Good Form

A winner of this tournament in 2021, Cerundolo has now made the quarterfinal here in 2023. More vitally he dished out a straight-set drubbing of Diego Schwartzman despite coming into that second round encounter as a 11/10 underdog.

Schwartzman is a former top-10 player and while admitted he hasn’t been at his best in recent times, one would have expected him to start off a favourite against a player who has never been ranked better than 79th in the world.

As it turned out, it was Cerundolo who dominated the proceedings throughout the match. He took the early break and while Schwartzman levelled out and forced the opening set into a tie-breaker, Cerundolo clinched it off his third set-point.

The second set proved to be a one-sided affair as Cerundolo completed a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win in an hour and 41 minutes.

Dellien Blows Pella Out

In his only match on a hardcourt surface this season, Dellien was sent packing from the Australian Open first round. Since then he has played in eight matches on clay, including a few on the Challenger circuit and a couple of qualifiers here, and won seven.

The last two of those wins have come in this tournament, both of which have been in straight sets.

After sending out Pedro Cachin in the first round, Dellien eased his way through to the quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-4 rout of Guido Pella. The match lasted an hour and a half.

What was really good from Dellien’s point of view was his serving, which saw just one break-point opportunity for Pella. The Argentine couldn’t take it and Dellien broke his opponent twice to take the match away.

Can he now make it three in three?

Cerundolo v Dellien Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo is 7/10 to win but Dellien’s play in the last two matches makes that a tough call to make. Could go either way with a third set expected.
