Who is Playing at the 2023 ATP Argentina Open?

For the first time in the tournament’s history, Carlos Alcaraz will be playing at the Argentina Open. This event has been graced by some of the biggest names in tennis such as Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya in the past. And now Alcaraz, whose rise to stardom, was one of the best storylines to come from 2022 is making the trip to Buenos Aires.

Alcaraz pulled out of this year’s Australian Open due to a leg injury, but soon after, he hit the practice courts on clay to get ready for a bumpy ride in South America (also scheduled to appear in Rio).

Two-time champion Dominic Thiem will make his fourth visit to Buenos Aires having taken a wild card. Defending champion Casper Ruud has not signed up for this tournament and won’t be returning to Argentina this year.

Argentina players’ presence in the 28-man draw is vast. Diego Schwartzman will be joined by Francisco Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez, Pedro Cachin, and Federico Coria to name but a few.

Four players will be drawn from qualifying while two names will enter the main draw under the special exemption rule.

Our 2023 ATP Argentina Open Predictions & Picks

Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed here, but he hasn’t struck a ball in 2023 thus far. Last year an abdominal injury forced him to miss out on playing at the ATP Finals. And a week before the Australian Open, he injured his leg. We are not entirely certain how he is feeling from a physical standpoint until we get to see him in a few matches. So we are steering clear in backing the young Spaniard outright.

Second seed Cameron Norrie warmed up for the clay with two big wins in the Davis Cup qualifiers in Colombia. The Briton’s high topspin forehand is the kind of shot that will cause ruins to his opponents. And with a title on clay under his belt from last season, he’s worth backing in the outright market.

An Argentine that should be singled out here is Francisco Cerundolo. At the time of writing he is playing in the quarterfinal in Cordoba, and depending on how deep he goes into that tournament will likely affect his chances here. But the 24-year-old is playing the best tennis of his life and could potentially overtake Schwartzman as Argentina’s No. 1 next week.
