Marketa Vondrousova v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Vondrousova has won both those encounters. Both these matches came in 2019.

Potapova Could Break Top 40 after Quarterfinal Win

Coming into this tournament, Potapova was ranked 44th in the world and by making it to the semifinal she would have broken into the top 40 when the new WTA Rankings are released in the coming week.

And she did that by defeating Anna-Lena Friedsam in her quarterfinal in three sets, the third successive three-setter she had to face in the tournament.

After wins over Lucia Bronzetti and Jule Niemeier, Potapova did a number on Friedsam, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 44 minutes.

Potapova made a slow start to the match, losing her serve twice in a span of two games and failing to grab hold of any of the five breaking opportunities she got. She frittered away two more such chances in the second set before converting the third, and while she dropped her serve once, Potapova broke Friedsam in the 10th game to level the proceedings.

The third set turned out to be a procession as Potapova kept getting the better of her opponent’s serve to seal her place in the last four.

Can she overturn her poor record against her Czech opponent here?

Vondrousova Inching Back up the Rankings

She was once ranked 14th in the world but injuries caused Vondrousova to miss a chunk of tennis and the return to the sport did bring her great results. As a result she had fallen to 124th on the WTA charts last season.

A good start to this year, which includes a semifinal appearance in Linz, means Vondrousova could well be knocking on the doors of a top 70 ranking.

Vondrousova, who had defeated Viktoriya Tomova and Rebeka Masarova in the first two rounds here, needed just 20 minutes on court with Dalma Galfi in her quarterfinals before her opponent retired from the encounter because of fitness concerns. The Czech player led 4-1 at that stage.

Can Vondrousova now put it across Potapova to make it to her first final since having reached there at the French Open in 2019?

Potapova v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova is in roaring form and at 3/10, looks to be a proper favourite to claim a finals berth. We still think Potapova could win a set though.
