Mackenzie McDonald v Taro Daniel Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before. Daniel beat McDonald twice in qualifying for Indian Wells, but their one match in the main draw of a senior tournament went the way of the American on the clay of Barcelona in 2019.

McDonald Beat Nadal in Melbourne

The closest that McDonald has come to winning a senior singles event was finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner in the Washington Open in 2021, but he did finally break his ATP title duck last year, when he won the doubles at the Japan Open with partner Marcelo Melo.

He had a strong end to last season, reaching the semi-finals in Naples, and the last eight in both Florence and Seoul, and, although he has yet to reach those heights so far, he has had one headline victory to his name.

That came in the second round of the Australian Open, where he was drawn against the defending champion Rafael Nadal., Not only did he beat the Spaniard, dumping him out of the tournament, but he did it in straight sets as well.

However, his run was ended by another Japanese player, Yoshito Nishioka, losing himself in straight sets,

Last week in Dallas, he easily beat the Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco in the first round, but allowed himself to be dominated by his second round opponent, Frances Tiafoe.

Daniel’s Had an Indifferent Start to the Season

Daniel is currently the number two Japanese player, even though his father is American, and the family moved to Spain where he was 14.

He is a winner on the main tour, although his one victory was back in 2018 on the clay of Istanbul. That same year he reached a career high of 64 in the world, although struggles with form saw him drop out of the top 100 at the start of last year, before climbing his way back up again.

An indifferent start to 2023 means that he has to surmount that obstacle once more.

His campaign began with qualifying for the first tournament in Adelaide, which he successfully managed only to lose in the opening round to the world number 463, Ajeet Rai of New Zealand.

He did win his opening match at the Australian Open, defeating the Mexican Ernesto Escubedo in four sets, but then was well beaten by Denis Shapovalov.

In his only match since then, he won his one Davis Cup match against a Pole ranked more than 150 places below him in the world.

McDonald v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Based on current form McDonald will consider himself clear favourite for this match, especially if he can produce the same form that saw him beat Nadal in Melbourne.
