Radu Albot v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Verdasco has won all their matches.

The Spaniard won on clay in Bucharest in 2018, and again at the Madrid Masters the following year, with a victory at the Australian Open sandwiched in between.

And, last year, he beat Albot in qualifying for the clay court event in Estoril.

Albot is a Former Winner at This Tournament

Four years ago, Albot won the title in Delray Beach, beating Dan Evans in the final, his only senior ATP final. A few months after that he was ranked as high as 39 in the world, but the Moldovan has struggled for form since then, and, as a result, his ranking has slid.

He did briefly break back into the top 100, after winning a Challenger event in Turkey in September, and finishing runner-up in another in South Korea the following months, but his results since then have been disappointing.

2023 began with three straight defeats – in the first round of Pune, at the Australian Open and in a Challenger event in Tenerife.

The Moldovan arrested the trend by reaching the quarter-finals of the Challenger tournament in Quimper, before losing to the local player Geoffrey Blancaneaux.

In Dallas last week, he won his opening match against the American wildcard Liam Krall, not without some difficulty, but then lost in straight sets to another American, J.J. Wolf.

Verdasco Now One of the Oldest Players on Tour

At 39 years old, Verdasco is one of the oldest players still playing on tour, and he must be contemplating retirement soon.

But when he does finally hang up his racquet he can look back with some satisfaction on a career that saw him win seven senior titles, reach sixteen more finals and twice having won the Davis Cup with his country.

And, whilst he may be ageing, his forehand and serves remain formidable weapons.

This will be his third tournament of the year so far.

His first ended in disappointment, when he was beaten in the second qualifying round of the Australian Open.

He was again forced to enter the qualifying competition in Dallas last week, but, that time navigated it successfully to set up a first round tie with the American Mackenzie McDonald.

However, McDonald proved too strong for him, beating him easily in straight sets.

Albot v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

Although there is very little to choose between the two in terms of rankings, the weight of history is against Albot in this match. Perhaps his best bet is to channel the inner self that saw him win this tournament four years ago, or to try and take Verdasco’s ageing legs to three sets.
