Zverev Still Getting Back to Full Match Fitness

After having spent most of the second of the previous season on the sidelines because of an ankle injury, Zverev hasn’t quite made a great start to the year. Of the six matches that he’s played including two in the Davis Cup, Zverev has won just a couple.

Zverev, once ranked number two in the world, needed five sets to get past Juan Pablo Varillas in the opening round of the Australian Open and then won against Stan Wawrinka in the Davis Cup.

Defeats against Jiri Lehecka, Taylor Fritz, Michael Mmoh and Marc-Andrea Huesler, however, would have been difficult to endure. Especially for a player who has won five Masters 1000 titles and made one Grand Slam final already, and 17 other singles titles at the highest level.

Coming up against Kwon, who is ranked 60th in the world, Zverev would think he has a good chance of adding to his wins tally but his opponent has shown a tendency to come up with some fine performances this season already.

Kwon Coming off Davis Cup Celebration

For the first time ever in their history did South Korea reach the Davis Cup Final and they did that earlier this year by defeating Belgium in the qualifiers.

This would be down to Kwon’s performance in his match against David Goffin, whom he defeated from being a set down.

Not that his win should have come up as a huge surprise after Kwon showed what he was capable of earlier this season at the Adelaide International 2. Starting out as a qualifier in that tournament, Kwon overcame the likes of Tomas Machac, Pablo Carreno Busta, Mikael Ymer, Jack Draper and Roberto Bautista Agut to lift the title.

On either side of that victory though, Kwon was bundled out in the first round of tournaments, losing in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Can he now take his form into this opener against a former world number two who has been struggling to notch up victories?

Zverev v Kwon Prediction and Tip

Zverev is still some way off his best form and at 21/10, Kwon looks like a good bet to go with to clinch a place in the second round. Might see a three-setter too.
