Andrey Rublev v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

Their previous two meetings have been split between these two players. Rublev won on clay at Monte-Carlo last year while de Minaur had clinched their tie at the 2018 Washington Open.

Rublev Coming off Australian Open Quarterfinal Appearance

While Rublev hadn’t quite made the kind of start to the season that he would have liked, he did turn things around at the Australian Open.

Sure, the world number five was pummelled in straight sets by Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal, but Rublev had defeated four very challenging opponents to get to that stage.

After getting the better of Dominic Thiem in his opener there, Rublev sent out Emil Ruusuvuori before crushing Dan Evans in the third round. And while Holger Rune took him the distance, Rublev edged his opponent out in the fifth set tie-breaker to reserve his place in the last eight.

Earlier in the season, Rublev had lost both his openers – at Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2 – to raise questions over his preparedness for the season. He looks to have put that behind him coming into a tournament he won in 2021.

de Minaur Also Lost to Djokovic in Last Match

Much like his opponent in this encounter, de Minaur is also coming off a defeat in his previous match to the world number one Novak Djokovic.

In fact, de Minaur was Djokovic’s fourth round opponent while Rublev faced him in the next match, i.e. the quarterfinals. The result was no different, with de Minaur winning a mere five games in that match to Rublev’s seven in the next.

De Minaur had kicked things off at the United Cup where he won and lost one with his victory coming at the expense of a less than 100% fit Rafael Nadal. He then won three rounds at his home Grand Slam which included wins over Adrian Mannarino and Benjamin Bonzi before Djokovic took him out.

Having twice played in this tournament before this year, de Minaur had gone as far as the quarterfinal stage in 2022 but he had David Goffin and Mackenzie McDonald as his opponents then. Rublev is a different kettle of fish.

Rublev v de Minaur Prediction and Tip

Not surprisingly it’s Rublev who starts off a 9/20 favourite here. Expect him to come through and in straight sets by our estimation.
