Felix Auger-Aliassime v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Hamburg Open in 2020 which Auger-Aliassime won in straight sets.

For a player ranked in the top 10, Auger-Aliassime has made a slowish start to the season so far.

The Canadian fell in the very first round of the Adelaide International 1 which was his opening salvo for 2023. He followed that up with a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open but even those three wins did not look very convincing.

He was stretched to four sets by Vasek Pospisil and clay-court specialist Francisco Cerundolo and fell two sets to love down to Alex Molcan before winning that in five.

And then against Jiri Lehecka, Auger-Aliassime fell to a four-set defeat after grabbing the opening set.

Having won the title here last season – it was Auger-Aliassime’s first of four for the year – the world number seven will hope to carry those memories forward here, rather than what’s transpired during 2023 so far.

Sonego Much Improved at Montpellier

It wasn’t a very good start to the season for Sonego either as he fell to back to defeats in the two Adelaide competitions and then lost his second round match at the Australian Open.

The Montpellier Open, however, saw Sonego improve on his performances as he won successive matches to make it to the quarterfinals.

In the first round, he defeated Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4 before routing Filip Krajinovic in straight sets as well in the second round. That, unfortunately, is where his challenge ended as Jannik Sinner got the better of him on his way to the final.

Against Auger-Aliassime, Sonego will need to pull out something special though. Something as special as he had against Novak Djokovic at the 2020 Vienna Open or Hubert Hurkacz at the 2022 Moselle Open, both wins on indoor hard court surfaces against top-10 players.

With his opponent having shown vulnerabilities, it might give Sonego an opening.

Auger-Aliassime v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime’s form might not have been the best this season but he still starts off 2/7 to win this. That being said, we expect Sonego to put up a fight in what could be a straight-set win for his opponent.
