Ben Shelton had an incredible Australian Summer showing a high level at the Australian Open. He made his way deep into the event and he was rewarded by making his top 50 debut after the event. It’s been mostly resting for him since then but he’s going to play in Delray Beach.
This is a crucial part of the year for him as he can use this North American stretch to further improve his ranking while on a high from his Australian Open performance. The record is 5-3 but his play is tailor-made for the American hard courts and he’s probably going to show that in Delray Beach.
A lot will depend on his serve and if serves as well as he can this should be a match that wins rather comfortably. He never played Giron before but they should be very familiar with each other.
It will also be a chance for him to demonstrate his skill to the American audience and he should be excited about that prospect as well.

Giron Back to Delray Beach
Marcos Giron returns to Delray Beach once again as the American has never skipped this event. Last year was the best he ever did reaching the second round and losing to John Millman in two sets. It’s not the most ideal surface for him as he doesn’t play with too much power.
Giron is a very finesse player and that will leave him in trouble against Shelton who is raw power. A lot will depend on his serve and how well he can combine it with the variety his other shots offer. It’s been an okay start with 5-4 on the year but he can do far better.
The experience is on his side and he should have that age and being familiar with the courts a bit more. The daunting task of returning that serve should make him prepare well for this matchup and he can’t win it otherwise.
He’ll need a bit of luck and a down day from Shelton because if both play their best then Giron is in a lot of trouble. He simply doesn’t have the talent to counter Shelton well.

They never played before so it’s going to be interesting to see how they match up. It’s not the best matchup for Giron and I don’t think he will be able to do much unless it’s a very bad day from Shelton.
