Fabio Fognini v Laslo Djere Head to Head

They are 1-1 from their previous meetings. Both of the matches took place in 2021. Djere won on clay in Geneva, while Fognini won on grass at Wimbledon.

Fabio Fognini heads to the Buenos Aires Open in search of his first win of the season.

The 35-year-old Italian suffered a tough three-set loss to Jenson Brooksby at the Auckland Open and then was beaten in straight sets by Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open.

The world no. 58 also had a losing 19-23 record in 2022, but he still did a good job of reaching two clay court semifinals in Rio and Begrade.

In Buenos Aires, the former no. 9 has a 10-13 record. He was a finalist in 2014, finishing runner-up to David Ferrer and had two quarterfinal finishes in 2013 and last year.

Fognini, who has been at his best on clay throughout his career, has nine titles from 19 finals and is 8-6 in clay court finals. He has seen a dip in the rankings over the last one year. Now can he move back up with seemm good performances on South American clay?

Djere Is 5-3 in 2023

While Fognini is yet to win a match in 2023, Laslo Djere has already got a few wins under his belt. One of those came against the-World no. 3 Casper Ruud in the second round in Auckland.

Djere rallied to beat Ruud in three to reach the last eight of the tournament, where he was sent packing by Constant Lestienne.

Overall, the World no. 62 is 5-3 this year. Djere’s other wins this year came over Alex Molcan, Jaume Munar and Zizou Bergs in the opening rounds of the Maharashtra Open, Auckland Open and the Australian Open respectively. He also won his Davis Cup match against Norway’s Viktor Durasovic.

So the Serb has not lost a first round match this year. He is also moving up in the rankings. Last year in August, he had fallen to no. 89, but the former no. 27 is moving up the rankings again.

Djere has a 2-2 record in ATP finals and both his triumphant runs have come on clay. Last year he reached his first hard court final in Winston-Salem, only to finish runner-up.

He has a 3-3 record in Buenos Aires with his best coming in 2021 when he was a quarterfinalist. How far can he go this year?

Djere is in better form at the moment. He has also not lost an opening roudn match this year. Fognini meanwhile is 0-2. He also hasn’t played for close to a month. So it’s advantage Djere. The Serb should win this contest and setup a clash with top seed Carlos Alcaraz, who has a first round bye.
