Pedro Martinez v Bernabe Zapata Miralles Head to Head

They have never met at the tour level but they are 4-4 from all their matches in lower level tournaments. Most recently, they met at the Paris Masters qualifiers last year with Zapata Miralles prevailing. That was their only meeting on hard court. All of their other meetings have been on clay.

Martinez on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Pedro Martinez started the season with back-to-back wins at the Maharashtra Open, but ever since going down to Aslan Karatsev in the quarterfinal in that tournament he has not won another match this year.

Martinez went down to Hubert Hurkacz  in straight sets at the Australian Open and then lost in three sets to Cristian Garin in Cordoba this week.

It will be interesting to see if he can snap the three-match losing skid with an opening round win Buenos Aires. The 25-year-old has a 2-2 record in the Argentine capital, going down in the round of 16 in 2020 and 2022.

Clay brings the best out of the Spaniard and it was no surprise that he lifted his maiden ATP title on this very surface in Santiago last year. He had also reached his maiden ATP final on clay in Kitzbuhel in 2021.

Apart from that run to the title in Chile, things were a bit tough for Martinez throughout 2022 as he ended up with plenty of first round exits and that reflected on his overall season record of 24-31. He will be hoping for a better display this year. Can he begin with a win in Buenos Aires?

Zapata Miralles Got His First Win of the Season in Cordoba

Bernabe Zapata Miralles has struggled so far this season, but the Spaniard notched his first win of 2023 in Cordoba, defeating Roberto Carballes Baena in a three-set opening round thriller.

Zapata Miralles fought back from a set down to beat Carballes Baena, but fell in the round of 16 to Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera.

Ranked no. 76th in the world, Zapata Miralles had lost his first round matches in Pune and the Australian Opens and also lost the first qualifying round in Adelaide-2. While he couldn’t win a set in the first three matches, he would be happy to have got a win on clay in Cordoba and then gone down in three in the next round.

Zapata Miralles, who reached the fourth round of the French Open last year, has played most of his tennis on clay, having won all four of his titles at the Challenger level on the surface.

Martinez v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

They are 4-4 from their previous meetings, so there is little to choose between the two. Expect this to go the distance. Martinez is the more experienced player and that could help him edge into the next round and set up a meeting with fourth seed Diego Schwartzman, who has a first round bye.
