Ekaterina Alexandrova v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

Pliskova leads the rivalry 2-1. The Czech won in Roland Garros in 2017 and in Eastbourne in 2019, but it is Alexandrova, who won the most recent matchup in Charleston last year.

Alexandrova Searching for Consistency

Ekaterina Alexandrova had a brilliant run last season, but she hasn’t been able to settle into rhythm so far this year.

The world no. 18 began the season by losing to Markéta Vondroušová in the first round in Adelaide. She picked up a win over Jaimee Fourlis in Adelaide-2, but withdrew from the next round.

At the Australian Open, Alexandrova reached the third round for the third time but once again failed to make a four round debut at a major after she went down to eventual semifinalist Magda Linette. The Russian’s two wins in the tournament had come over Ysaline Bonaventure and Taylor Townsend.

Most recently, Alexandrova participated at the Linz Open. She was seeded no. 2 in the tournament but was stunned by Rebeka Masarova in a thrilling three-set opener.

The 28-year-old had a successful 38-18 season last year, when she won two titles in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Seoul. She also featured in three semifinals in Charleston, Madrid and Ostrava and as a result of that she made considerable gain in the rankings, breaking into the top 20 by the end of the season. She touched a career-high ranking of no. 17 on January 30 this year, but dropped a place to no. 18 this week.

Can she get some consistency in her game in Doha and move back up?

Pliskova Qualifies for Main Draw

2017 champion Karolina Pliskova didn’t get a direct entry into the main draw this year, instead she had to fight it out in the qualifiers. While she survived a scare in the first qualifier, she got better in the next two, winning in straight sets and heading into the main draw.

Ranked no. 19th in the world, Pliskova had lost the first set against Ana Bogdan in the opening qualifying round, but she bounced back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

She then trounced Harriet Dart 6-1, 6-2, before knocking out Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-5 in the final qualifying round. This was Pliskova’s fifth qualifying round win of the season after she won two in Adelaide-2 as well. But she lost in the first round in both the Adelaide tournaments, thus getting off to a 0-2 start in the main draws.

However, she struck form at the Australian Open and overpowered the first four opponents in straight sets. Her promising run eventually ended with a quarterfinal defeat to Magda Linette.

Following that defeat, she featured in Abu Dhabi last week and won her opener against Ysaline Bonaventure, but lost in the second round to Elena Rybakina.

A 16-time winner on the tour from 32 finals, Pliskova had won the title in Qatar in 2017 by beating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. She also made it to the quarterfinals in 2021 in what remains her second best performance in Qatar. Can she match or better that performance in 2023?

Alexandrova v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova may be ranked higher, but Pliskova is the one who is in better form at the moment. She is also the more experienced player and a former champion in Qatar. Additionally, she has notched 10 wins this season (from all levels), seven more than her opponent. So Pliskova is etter placed to win the contest.
