Joao Sousa v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Santiago Open where Varillas had defeated Sousa in straight sets in the first round.

Sousa’s poor form coming into the Golden Swing had seen him crash out of the Auckland Open in the opener – having qualified as a lucky loser in the first place – and then suffer a first round loss at the Australian Open.
Representing Portugal in the Davis Cup against Czech Republic, Sousa lost both his singles matches, leaving him awaiting the start of the clay court swing.
And surely enough things turned around a bit for Sousa at the Cordoba Open.
Going into his both his first two rounds at the Cordoba Open last week at 5/2 (or longer) odds to win the match, Sousa managed to do just that. In the first round, he overcame Tomas Etcheverry after being a set down before edging past Cristian Garin in the second.
It took the experience of Albert Ramos-Vinolas to finally end his stint in the tournament.
Can he continue that form in this competition as well as he starts off his campaign against a player who starts off a bookmakers’ favourite.

Varillas Surprises Delbonis in Qualifiers
Varillas has himself not been in the best of touches all season, and even the transition to clay hasn’t brought him the kind of main draw results he would have liked. So far that is.
Because while Varillas lost in the second round of the Concepcion Challenger and then fell in the Cordoba Open opener to Dusan Lajovic, his qualifying results here in Buenos Aires will make him feel better.
The Peruvian player did not have too much trouble getting past Thiago Tirante in the first qualifying round but it was his win over Federico Delbonis in the second that should give him the boost he needs.
Delbonis, a former world number 33 who has lost his way in more recent times, was a favourite in that encounter but Varillas shut him down in straight sets.
