Tommy Paul v Denis Kudla Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting in the main draw of an event at the highest level – at the Washington Open of 2019. Paul had won that in straight sets.

Interestingly, other than that, they had faced off in three Challenger tournaments and the qualifiers of another ATP competition and Kudla had won every single time.

Paul Breaks into Top 20 after Australian Open Showing

After making an ordinary start to the season when he fell in the second round of the Adelaide International, Paul surprised the world – and probably himself too – by making it to the semifinal of the Australian Open.

For someone who had entered the fourth round of a major just once before that – and having lost that match – Paul’s semifinal appearance was a huge jump forward.

That he overcame the likes of Jenson Brooksy, Roberto Bautista Agut and Ben Shelton before meeting his match in the form of Novak Djokovic also spoke its own tale.

Paul has played just one match since then though, a Davis Cup encounter against the 451st-ranked Khumoun Sultanov and he needed a second set tie-breaker to come through that one.

It was probably a case of rustiness there and that could be one of the challenges here too when he faces Kudla but as far as confidence goes, this would be the best Paul would have felt in a while.

Kudla Squeaks Past Thompson

While Paul had a first round bye, Kudla needed two hours and 37 minutes of court time to get past Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the first round.

The American came through 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in his opening round match after enduring a barrage of 19 aces against him. Where Kudla did score over his opponent was getting a lot more of his first serves in and winning a higher percentage of points off his second serve.

Thompson was a set and a break up in the second set and had a break-point in two other games in that set but failed to clinch the match.

In the third, neither player got themselves a break-point and as a result of that, it went into a tie-breaker which Kudla easily claimed.

Earlier this season, Kudla’s only win came in the first round of the Australian Open where he defeated Roman Safiullin having entered the tournament as a lucky loser. He had lost to Thompson last week in Dallas but extracted his revenge here.

Paul could be a different kettle of fish though.

Paul v Kudla Prediction and Tip

A straight-set win for Paul looks the most likely of results despite his absence from the sport since the Australian Open.
