Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings and Tsitsipas has won five of them. This includes the fourth round encounter earlier this year at the Australian Open where Tsitsipas won in five.

Sinner’s only win over Tsitsipas came on the clay courts of the 2020 Rome Masters.

Tsitsipas Sends Ruusuvuori Out

Tsitsipas overcame a slow start to his Rotterdam Open campaign before turning on the heat and defeating Emil Ruusuvuori in his opener.

The world number three was broken early in the first set but came back to dish out two breaks to Ruusuvuori before winning 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 33 minutes.

Down 3-5 in the opening set, Tsitsipas turned things around drastically by winning 10 of the next 11 games which included four breaks of serves. This result follows Tsitsipas’ twin singles wins in the Davis Cup immediately after he had fallen to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open.

That has been Tsitsipas’ only defeat this year to go with 13 singles wins he has garnered all season.

He now faces a difficult challenge in the form of Sinner but will know that he has had a wood on his opponent, not to mention having also defeated him earlier this season.

Sinner Makes it Four in Four

Sinner looked to have warmed up nicely for this event with a title win at the Montpellier Open last week. In a competition in which he had a first round bye and got a second round walkover from Marton Fucsovics, Sinner went on to win his next three matches in straight sets to lift the trophy there.

Strangely, he looked to be slightly off his best in this first round match against Benjamin Bonzi, needing three sets to get past his French opponent.

The Italian finally won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in over two hours of tennis, with a loss of serve in the second set the only time he was broken in the entire match. Otherwise, he got the better of Bonzi’s serve on four occasions – two apiece in the first and third sets – and saved two break-points he faced in those two sets.

Sinner’s lost two matches this season. The first came in the quarterfinal of the Adelaide International at the hands of Sebastian Korda before Tsitsipas defeated him at the Australian Open.

Can he avert a third loss in 2023?

Tsitsipas v Sinner Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas is 1/2 to win this and we need to back him given his overall form and head to head record against Sinner. Might see a third set though.
