Schwartzman Drops Out of the Top 30

Diego Schwartzman’s poor start to the season has come at a cost. He has exited the world’s top 30, and has also been overtaken by his younger compatriot Francisco Cerundolo as Argentina’s new No. 1.

Schwartzman has one win in his last 11 matches heading to his home city of Buenos Aires this week. He ended that winless streak at this year’s Australian Open when he defeated world No. 169 Oleksii Krutykh in the first round.

He lost to world No. 105 Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the Round of 16 in Cordoba as the top seed. Schwartzman would admit how after the match his father’s health has been weighing heavily on him, having been taken ill to hospital for three weeks.

He also attributed to a lack of adaptability on the clay, having scheduled multiple practice sessions during the day in order to control the ball effectively. Let’s see if the 30-year-old former Buenos Aires champion can find his mojo this week.

Zapata Miralles Beats Martinez In A Marathon

Bernanbe Zapata Miralles is making quite a statement during this Golden Swing. He’s been involved in some of the most brutal and marathon best-of-three matches in 2023 and we’re only in February.

The Spaniard played a near three-and-half-hour slugfest against Carballes Baena in Cordoba last week, fighting back from 2-4 down in the decider to win in three sets.

And he kept the trend of going the full distance in Buenos Aires as he overcame Pedro Martinez in an all-Spanish affair in a topsy-turvy match that lasted two hours and 40 minutes.

Zapata Miralles won 6-1 3-6 6-4 in a match featuring an astonishing 18 service breaks. The serve of both players was a horror show most of the time, with Martinez accounting for 11 double faults and winning 36% points on his second serve.

Schwartzman v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

On clay, the grind and grit are so important to win points. The serve not so much. And Zapata Miralles’ first-round match is a case in point. Schwartzman is in the worst period of his career, struggling for wins and his confidence has taken a hit. But on the basis of that shambolic match by the Spaniard on Monday, surely the Argentine will not let this nightmarish start to continue.
